  10. SUBJECT: MGT - WILD FIRE VOLUNTEERS - PART 1/2                                  
  11.                                                                                 
  12.         The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection               
  13. (CDF) has a Volunteers in Prevention (VIP) program to involve and               
  14. use individual citizens and public service groups to reduce                     
  15. California's wildland fires.  We frequently receive inquiries                   
  16. from other states about this worthwhile and growing program.                    
  17.         In the past few years California has experienced a                      
  18. tremendous increase in the number of wildland fires and fires                   
  19. will continue to cause resource loss and financial drain on the                 
  20. public.                                                                         
  21.                                                                                 
  22. Volunteers in Prevention receive training in the Department's fire              
  23. prevention policies and practices.  Volunteers, under the direction and         
  24. supervision of a CDF employee, may be used for the following activities:        
  25.                                                                                 
  26. 1.  Conduct fire prevention education programs at preschool and                 
  27. elementary schools.                                                             
  28. 2.  Assist CDF in major fire information centers.                               
  29. 3.  Assist in disseminating fire prevention education and                       
  30. information materials to local citizen groups, business, and                    
  31. schools.  Also assist in fairs and other fire prevention                        
  32. displays.                                                                       
  33. 4.  Patrol selected hazardous areas during fire emergencies or                  
  34. periods of high fire hazard.  These are called "Red Flag"                       
  35. patrols, as one goal of this program is to reduce fires caused by               
  36. equipment use, arson, debris burning, and children playing with                 
  37. fire.
